Job Description:
AFT-Wisconsin is a labor organization comprised of members in the state PK-12 school system, the Wisconsin Technical College System, numerous state agencies, and the University of Wisconsin System. The Organizer will work with members, potential members, and coalition partners on internal and external organizing in order to build union power and stronger local unions in their assigned turf. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Help union leaders and members recruit new membership to their union
  • 1v1 and small group conversations with members and potential members
  • Pro-active outreach to members and potential members through home visits, worksite visits, emails, phone calls, text messages, and digital platforms
  • Maintaining and updating all field data to help themselves and membership work smarter – not harder – in their organizing efforts
  • Managing access to all relevant documents and union communication to ensure that member information is kept private and secure
  • Help membership identify issues to help them bring co-workers and communities together through union events/actions
  • Other duties as assigned 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with a team around shared values and goals
  • Understanding of organizing vs mobilizing, and how/when to put each into practice
  • Commitment to the labor movement and AFT-W
  • General knowledge of education and labor issues
  • General knowledge of Wisconsin’s political process and state-specific political issues
  • Ability to work with union members across a variety of employment sectors to build relationships and trust
  • Ability to actively listen to workers concerns, and connect those concerns to larger issues at their workplace and in their community
  • Able to understand directives and incorporate feedback
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends
  • Must be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to provide proof of vaccination for Covid-19
  • College degree preferred, but not required

Salary and Benefits:
$40,800 annual salary and strong benefit package, under collective bargaining agreement.
