One of our core missions as a union is to ensure that all students have access to a high quality education. Thus every year we offer university and technical college scholarships to children and grandchildren of current or retired AFTW members. This year a $1,000 university scholarship and a $500 technical college scholarship were awarded.
Our $1,000 university scholarship was awarded to Samuel Weyenberg who graduated as the valedictorian from Hortonville High School. While in high school he participated in cross country, track and field, basketball, DECA, Math Club, Spanish Club, and the National Honor Society. He also found time to referee youth sports and work with students in public speaking. During the summer of 2019 he held an IT summer internship replacing and updating computers. Samuel plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to obtain a degree in mechanical engineering. His father, Mark Weyenberg, is a member of the Hortonville Federation of Teachers, Local 6259.
Kaden Chermack received the $500 Phil Neuenfeldt Memorial Scholarship for a technical college. At Chippewa Falls Senior High School he was a Link Leader and a member of the National Honor Society, Art Club, Community Service Club, and Ski Club. Kaden worked at the Mason Shoe Company in retail sales. In addition, he had the opportunity to participate in a job shadow program at the Mayo Clinic. Kaden plans to attend the Chippewa Valley Technical College to pursue a career in radiography. His mother, Jennifer Handrick, is a member of the Chippewa Falls Federation of Teachers, Local 1907.
Congratulations to our scholarship recipients!
