AFT-Wisconsin has a long tradition of offering educational scholarships to support dependents of members in good standing who wish to pursue a secondary education. AFT-Wisconsin offers one $1,000 university scholarship and one $500 technical college scholarship.

This year, an additional $1,000 university scholarship will be awarded in memory of Kathy Monaghan, a long time union member, activist, and leader in AFT-Wisconsin.

Eligibility for Scholarships: Applicant's parent, grandparent

Ilee Smith, daughter of members Kyle and Kim Smith of the Superior Federation of Teachers, Local 202, was awarded the first annual AFT-W Kathy Monaghan Memorial Scholarship.  Ilee plans to attend the College of Saint Scholastica to earn her undergraduate degree in a medical field before pursuing a Masters and possible Doctorate degree in a medical field.  Ilee is currently a member of the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), Local 1189 at Ecumen Lakeshore.  She has experienced the importance of unions firsthand in addition to all she has learned and experienced

Elsa Mowers

The 2021 university scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Elsa Mowers, valedictorian at Esko High School with a 4.0 grade point average. She also attended classes at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Lake Superior College and the College of St. Scholastic for university credits. She received a scholarship to attend Conserve School, a semester school for environmental stewardship. In high school Elsa was in concert and jazz band, the varsity Math Team, Bio-club, National Honor Society, Biathlon Club and varsity captain of the soccer club. One of our core missions as a union is to ensure that all students have access to a high quality education. Thus every year we offer university and technical college scholarships to children and grandchildren of current or retired AFTW members. This year a $1,000 university scholarship and a $500 technical college scholarship were awarded.

Our $1,000 university scholarship was awarded to Samuel Weyenberg who graduated as the valedictorian from Hortonville High School.

AFT-Wisconsin is a very diverse union; but all our members highly value and honor education.  As such, we offer scholarships for members' children and grandchildren of current or retired AFT-W members who will be attending technical colleges or universities.  This year two $1,000 university scholarships were awarded and one technical college $500 honorary scholarship in memory of Phil Neuenfeldt, Wisconsin AFL-CIO president, were given.

Every year, we offer one $500 technical college scholarship and one $1,000 university scholarship to children and grandchildren of current or retired AFTW members. The Scholarship Committee would like to congratulate this year's winners!

Our technical college scholarship recipient is Jeffrey Krueger from West Salem High School in West Salem, Wisconsin.  He plans to attend the Western Technical College in LaCrosse to study electromechanical technology to become a train engineer.  Jeffrey is a high honor roll student, a member of the cross country and track teams, and member of jazz band, DECA
