Local Spotlight: UW-Superior faculty and academic staff fight outsourcing

While the summer months are a time of rest and relaxation for many, I wanted to pass on some information about what members of AFT local 6514, the United Faculty of UW-Superior, have been doing recently.  Rather than heading into the woods or going to a water park, members of this local have been organizing to fight outsourcing and support good-quality public sector jobs.  (If you want to take similar action in your workplace, please fill out this brief form and we’ll be in touch!)

At the University of Wisconsin-Superior, United Faculty of UW-Superior members are standing together with their AFSCME sisters and brothers in custodial services and the grounds crew, whose jobs are being threatened with outsourcing.  Members of local 6514, along with other members of the community, have been fighting alongside these AFSCME members to show their support for keeping custodial and grounds services in house.  A rally is planned for July 28 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the public library (Belknap and Tower Ave.), and I encourage all AFT-Wisconsin members in the Superior area to join these workers in defense of good jobs and high-quality university services.  Please also consider signing a petition in support of these workers to be delivered to the UW-Superior Chancellor and Provost, which has currently collected well over 3,500 signatures.  Let’s show UW-Superior and UW System administration that we all care about keeping these services in-house and providing good, family-sustaining jobs for campus workers.

In the coming months, I’ll continue to spotlight the efforts and successes of our union members to help us all have a better sense of what AFT-Wisconsin members are accomplishing.  If members in your local are working on a project or campaign that you’d like to share with other AFT-Wisconsin members, please email me at president@aft-wisconsin.org and I’ll try to feature it in an upcoming membership email.

Thanks for all that you do!

Kim Kohlhaas

President, AFT-Wisconsin
